One thing we must know is that Islam is not a reactionary religion. Sunday school concept came from Christian (and also probably from Jews as well) Sunday schools. In reaction Muslims started Sunday school as well. My humble suggestion is we should have sunday school if there is no other choice but then pick sharp students from sunday school and talk to their parents so that they can send them again in another class other than sunday school. Yes, you have to design another class during the week. That could be between Maghrib to Isha (or whatever time is suitable). These are special sudents and they will need some special education inshaAllah. These muslim students will be the future of our community inshaAllah.
Pick and choose. Choice is yours.
Abu Fahad,
Jazakallah for your comment but I will have to slightly disagree. Though it may appear that the concept of Sunday school came from Christian schools you should realize that ours, in reality, is a weekend school. This was not based on reaction-this is more of an opinion rather than fact. I know this because the either of Sunday School in the Christian faith comes from the idea of having a mini-service/bible study for the youth while their parents observe their Sunday service. I think if it was reactionary it would have been more like Friday school - while the adults are sitting in the Khutba the young one’s are engaging in some sort of study. From what I know, weekend schools are only prevalent in non-Muslim countries. It just happens that we have it on Sunday instead of Saturday or both. Also, the thing that keeps us from organizing a special education program is the lack of dedicated volunteers. Keep in mind that the students spend most of their days in public schools leaving them one day for rest(Saturday) prior to their Sunday School involvement.
Jazak Allah O Khairan Br. Salim for the reply. Probably you are right about sunday school concept. You know more about it as compare to me. I just explained what I felt. Friday school is probably not possible as students are in public schools at that time.
As far as special class is concerned. I agree that you need volunteers for that, otherwise it would not be possible. I just explained the design and idea. Definately it need to be looked upon if it is possible within our community or not. I know kids need rest for saturday so that they can come on sunday. But even then I am sure (in my heart) that if parents are willing then we can do it. Dont forget this extra class would not be for all kids. Only for those who seems to learn more about Islam. Actually I have been through this experiance (not a very good example to compare here but just to give you an idea) in my college life. Our teacher was teaching the whole class but before (almost 3 months beofore) the start of our final exam, he picked a few students so that he can teach them seperately by giving them more homework and stuff to do. So that they could be prepared for the exam in a better way. I was one of them. Even though I had to do more but I was excited that I had been chosen. So we did it.
But I agree its not possible without volunteers and probably also without shaikh’s corporation.
May Allah help us all to understand and practice the Deen.
Sheikh Yasir Qadi refutes the notion that when people attack the prophet of Islam, they believe that ‘Freedom of speech’ is at stake which is clearly not the case.
